The lapdog Name
A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches. Proverbs 22:1
While many names may appear to better describe an organization specializing in personal and team development through experiential education, we rather chose a name that focuses on the intent of our hearts. There is a story in the Bible that does a great job at describing the hearts of lapdog, inc. founders.
In Judges Chapter six, Gideon is introduced as the youngest member of the smallest clan of Manassah, yet God chooses him to lead His people in opposition against the Midianites. After much testing, Gideon confirms his call from God to lead the Israelites against their longtime foes and raises an army of 32,000 strong. God, however, tells Gideon, “The people who are with you are too many for Me to give Midian into their hands lest Israel become boastful, saying, ‘My own power has delivered me.’ (NAS, Judges 7:2) God has Gideon send anyone who is afraid home, thus the army is reduced to 10,000 men.
Again, God tells Gideon the people are still too many and tells Gideon to take the men to the water. The Lord says, “You shall separate everyone who laps the water with his tongue, as a dog laps, as well as everyone who kneels to drink.” The number of those who lapped, putting their hand to their mouth, was 300 men. And the Lord said to Gideon, “I will deliver you with the 300 men who lapped and will give the Midianites into your hands.” (NAS, Judges 7:5-7) God using Gideon and 300 men defeated an army of Midianites that were “as many as locusts with camels without number”. (NAS, Judges 7:12) The victory unmistakingly belongs to the Lord.
Gideon and his army of 300 men, who lapped the water like dogs, teach lessons of faithfulness to and dependence upon God, development of a stronghold of courageous leaders willing to take risks, the importance of committed teamwork, and learning by experience and bringing glory to God.
This story is a great example of people identifying who they are, being refined, and then succeeding at what they are good at. It all started with an ordinary man striving to be the very best at what God had given them, and also being obedient to his Creator.
